If you’ve ever felt limited by data analytics tools or wondered how to unlock deeper insights within Fullstory’s Data Studio, you’re not alone. Recently, we hosted a webinar in partnership with Fullstory that covered tips and new features in Data Studio, showing how users can work with AI-powered suggestions, create specific elements, and refine CSS selectors to capture more meaningful data. Check out the Webinar here:
A few quick disclaimers:
✦ The recording includes visuals from a demo Fullstory site, so no actual Fullstory customer data was shown.
✦ Fullstory continues to make changes and improvements to the product, so if you’re watching this recording at a later date, know that some changes to features, functionality, and user interface may have occurred.
✦ The below recap was supported in part with AI, so to ensure complete accuracy of webinar contents, please watch the webinar itself.
Here’s a quick recap of the main points from our webinar:
To access Data Studio, there are a few different entry points:
1. Settings Menu - Under "Data Management" you’ll find a “Create Element” button for starting new elements.
2. Element Configuration from Events - If you have elements like metrics or CSS selectors in your search, you can configure them directly without switching tabs.
3. Dedicated Sidebar Button - For some users, a quick-access sidebar button offers a shortcut to Data Studio, though this feature is rolling out gradually.
Here’s an overview article from Fullstory on Data Studio ↗
Fullstory’s Inspect Mode helps you examine and capture specific elements on a page. A neat trick: if a small or tricky element is hard to select, holding down “Shift” while scrolling lets you toggle between nearby elements, making it easier to focus on the right area.
If Inspect Mode can’t grab a disabled element, use your browser’s inspect tools (accessible by right-clicking or pressing F12). This browser view allows you to select any element, regardless of whether it’s disabled, adding flexibility to your analysis.
Fullstory has an article on using CSS Selector in Fullstory Search ↗
Data Studio’s new AI Trim feature simplifies selector definitions, making them more stable and resilient to future changes. AI Trim refines selectors to only the essential attributes, minimizing the chance of breaking the definition if the website’s structure changes.
Data Studio offers tools to fine-tune your selectors:
- To broaden a selector (when it's too narrow), experiment with using substring searches. For example, defining a search bar might involve setting it to match any “search” substring across your site.
- To narrow a selector (when it’s too broad), add specific attributes or unique elements to isolate exactly what you need, so that you’re not capturing unrelated data.
One of the standout features for analysts is element extraction. For example, if you’re tracking the number of items in search results, you can use regex (regular expressions) to extract specific numerical values from text, making your data more actionable.
